Christmas Appeal 2024

Right now, only 50% of people in our community are receiving specialist end of life care. Your gift could help us give so much more than just care this Christmas.

No one should face death alone

We also know that Christmas can be a very difficult time for so many people; not only for the families and patients receiving our specialist end of life care, but for anyone who has been bereaved and for whom there is an empty space at the Christmas dinner table.

Everyone should have the chance to spend their last days in comfort, surrounded by their friends and families.

Charley’s last Christmas

Charley was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer in September 2022. His wife, Sue, tells us about his journey, and how Dorothy House supported them both through Charley’s last Christmas. Dorothy House’s Hospice at Home team to care and support them both, ensured that Charley died in peace and dignity.

Charley's diagnosis and support from Dorothy House

Charley's cancer journey

Charley was 66 when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Despite having symptoms, he looked and felt so well, he couldn’t believe there was anything to worry about. At first, the chemo worked incredibly well. For two months we didn’t think about it at all, we just lived; but the cancer markers started to creep up again. They then tried another drug but Charley didn’t respond to it at all. That was when we were referred to Dorothy House. We met with Helena, our Specialist Nurse who really understood us and our situation.

Support and care at Dorothy House

Everyone we met at Dorothy House was superbly professional, fantastically knowledgeable, and yet the experience didn’t feel overly medicalised. We just felt very much at home and that we were getting fantastic treatment and advice. Dorothy House also empowered me to be a brilliant advocate for Charley. I’m so proud of that, and I couldn’t have done it without them. I’m sure Charley wouldn’t have lived as well or as long had he not had that advocacy.

Christmas at home

Last Christmas, Charley was really quite unwell, but although it was different and difficult, the great thing was that he was at home. He even went on a long walk with my stepson Tom – there are so many things we wouldn’t have done had he been in hospital. Charley was able to be at home, and have things the way we wanted them to be. To know that at any moment we could pick up the phone and there would be somebody who would offer us support, just gave us tremendous confidence.

“None of us knows who within our family or friends is going to need hospice care. I don’t think anyone would want their loved ones to be in a position where they weren’t well cared for, and where the family weren’t well supported.”

How your donation supports our care

Could fund an hour’s session

with one of our specialist physiotherapists, using exercise and rehabilitation therapy to improve mobility and manage symptoms such as fatigue, pain and breathlessness. Donate £33.

Could fund 2 hours

of care from a Hospice at Home carer, during the night, enabling a patient to stay in the comfort of their own home at the end of their life. Donate £50.

Could fund 3 hours

of a Nurse Specialist’s time caring for one patient on our Inpatient Unit. Donate £100.

“If you’re able to give to Dorothy House, you won’t be giving just to one family, but many, many families. We’ve been very lucky because for us it was perfect; extraordinarily difficult, but the best it could possibly have been under the circumstances.”

Your gift will create memories for those who need us this Christmas

While our wonderful carers, nurses, doctors and therapists are doing everything they can over the Christmas period to support our patients and their families, we really need your help to ensure we reach everyone who needs us.

Every donation makes a meaningful difference and is invested in the most efficient and impactful way. For every £5 it costs to run our end of life care and bereavement support, only £1 is funded by the government.

Share your Christmas Memories with us

When you donate to our Appeal, we will offer the opportunity for you to share a special Christmas memory with us. We’ll post your message on our memory wall alongside messages from fellow Christmas Appeal supporters.

Your message could be a memory of a loved one at Christmas, support for our amazing staff, or even a seasonal recipe handed down to you by someone no longer with us.
