Young supporter donates paper round earnings to Dorothy House

After saving up the money from his paper round for Lent, 14-year-old Ciaran Ashford from Amesbury has donated £100 to Dorothy House Hospice Care.

Ciaran is the son of Dorothy House patient, Russell Ashford, who has been under our care for the last five years after being diagnosed with cancer in his spine. Just some of the care Russell has received from us has included physiotherapy, and regular attendance at the Same Boat Support Group. In addition, Ciaran and his dad have previously attended Creative Arts sessions, working on ceramics together.

Fundraising feats

Wanting to give something back and to help other patients and families going through similar experiences, Russell has been a keen fundraiser for Dorothy House over the last few years. A passionate fisherman, he and his friends and family took part in the Island Carp charity fishing tournament back in September, raising £3,000 for the Hospice.

Inspired by his dad’s positive spirit, Ciaran has taken in Russell’s footsteps and has also been fundraising for us. A few years ago, he shaved his head, raising funds for both Dorothy House and Stand Up to Cancer. He recently decided to save up the earnings from his paper round over Lent. This resulted in a fantastic £100, which he very generously donated to the Hospice.

Russell told us how proud he was of Ciaran and his generosity and how important it was for them to give something back as a family: “It’s not about the recognition for us, if we can just do our bit to help someone else going through what we are, that’s what it’s all about.”
