Making magical memories – Steve’s story
Steve Rimmer died on 5 May 2022 at his home in Semmington, which he shared with his wife, Barbara. He was surrounded by his family.
Steve wanted to be cared for at home. He was a well-loved figure in his community and staying close to his friends and family was important. Our Community Palliative Care Teams and Hospice at Home service supported this, and both Steve and his family expressed how important this care was.
Early on in his illness, Steve and Barbara found it hard to keep track of the different elements of Steve’s care. After Dorothy House became involved, they found they could just call us with any of their issues or concerns. This took a huge weight off their shoulders.
Liz, a Nurse Specialist in the Community Palliative Care Team helped with symptom control and pain management and Val, a Clinical Support Assistant gave practical advice and assistance, as well as emotional support. Steve’s family expressed their thanks to our team for enabling them to speak honestly and openly about where Steve was on his end-of-life journey.
Adding life to days
Steve received assistance and equipment that enabled him to be independent for as long as possible. One highlight was equipment that enabled Steve to have a relaxing bath at home, something that he had been missing.
Steve’s son Andy, who lived in Birmingham was able to use our 24-hour Advice Line when his dad was not feeling well. Our team supported him and Steve to ensure that he received the personalised care that he needed, when he needed. This package of care ensured that Steve and his family could enjoy the simple but most special moments together.
Andy, Steve’s son, says that his father received the right care at the right time, allowing him to be independent for as long as possible. Steve’s goal was to make it to his granddaughter’s 2nd birthday, which he did. Supported by medication provided by our Community Palliative Care Team, he was able to enjoy the day with a little more energy. He died the next day.
“It’s a time at which you feel lost, and I continue to feel lost. But there was all of this meaning and connection we got to have as a family, and it leads back to the broad range of services Dorothy House offered. Both practicalities, emotional support, signposting and aftercare.”

Fundraising for Dorothy House
While he was under our care, Steve wanted to support Dorothy House. In 2021 he took part in the Santa and Elf Run, assisted by his family. Andy has just taken part in the 2022 Bath Half Marathon in aid of Dorothy House and continues to support the Hospice in any way he can.
“I am extremely grateful to Dorothy House for getting our family through the most difficult time. The earlier you become accepting of the fact that something is going to happen down the line, the more you can get out of the life you have left, with the assistance of Dorothy House.”
Andy, Steve’s son.
