Firefly Appeal 2024

Dedicating a light on a Firefly is not only a celebration of the life of a loved one, but your donation also means that Dorothy House can continue to be there for patients and their families, now and into the future.

We're here, for as long as you need

We provide palliative and end of life care to adults (18+) with a progressive, treatable but not curable life-limiting illness or with severe frailty, and also their family (including children) and carers.

We care for people across our 800sq mile catchment area which covers Bath & North East Somerset (BaNES), and parts of Wiltshire and Somerset. Our services provide physical, psychological and/or spiritual support, and are free of charge. We’re available day and night to ensure that you have the right care, at the right time.

When someone is ill, it’s not just the patient who is affected. Life can be turned upside down for the family and for friends and carers. That’s why we’re here for you, for as long as you need. Our patient, family and carer resources can be accessed via our Information Hub.

Donate now

Your donation will help us care for even more patients and their families when they need it the most. Not only will it support people at the Hospice at Winsley House, but it also supports your community and those that wish to be cared for at home. Thank you.

Our Interactive Nature Trail is the next step in our ambition to open up the site to anyone wishing to find a wellbeing space to reflect in nature, or to find serenity in grief. Families can get stuck into our augmented reality app, discover the extraordinary habitats of our resident creatures, and learn more about the natural cycles of life and death.

Leave a gift in your will to Dorothy House

1 in 5 of our patients is cared for with thanks to gifts in wills. Every gift, no matter the size, makes a difference. It's your generosity that helps us to provide specialist care and to be there for those in need when it matters most. You can also download our free gifts in wills guide for more information on leaving a gift in your will to Dorothy House.

Sky Kids FYI - Lifecycles

We are proud to be featured in the latest episode of Sky Kids FYI, in a film entitled ‘Lifecycles.’

The team filmed at the Hospice, exploring our Interactive Nature Trail with Lucy, whose dad was cared for on our Inpatient Unit, and Julia Davidson from our Family Services Team. The film is a welcome iteration of our vision of a society where death is a part of life, and the importance of destigmatising death and dying for children and young people.

You can watch the full episode of FYI on demand via Sky News YouTube, Sky Kids, and the First News website.

Join our Monthly Givers

Help us to ensure that nobody in our community has to face death alone with a regular monthly donation to the Hospice.

As a Monthly Giver to Dorothy House, you will be joining our amazing group of supporters who believe in our care, and want to help make sure that we can continue to reach more people, now and into the future.

The care that your money could help provide is invaluable. Our patients only get one chance to have a good death, and the memory of how a loved one dies remains with their family forever.

The founding of Dorothy House

Ahead of the twentieth anniversary of Prue Dufour’s death (21st August), we were lucky enough to speak to Dr Bridget Wakefield, who was on the original committee at the founding of Dorothy House.

At 93 years old, Bridget tells us about her career, how she came to work in palliative care at the inception of the hospice movement, the creation of Dorothy House, and her relationship with Prue herself.

The Dorothy House Podcast

In this episode, Fin's mum Sandie and BA (Hons) Photography Course Leader, Stephen Vaughan, share their painful but deeply inspirational story about Fin, who died on 25 March 2022, aged 31, following the diagnosis of a brain tumour in 2018. On Friday 20 October, Bath Spa University launched an exhibition and 100-page publication of work by Fin, titled ‘With This Breath’. This formed part of his legacy, something that concerned him before his death, and a project which has been fully realised. “It was an incredibly courageous and beautiful piece of work that was unflinchingly honest and deeply moving,“ says Stephen.
